Daniel L. Gilbert, a chartered life underwriter (CLU®) and chartered financial consultant (ChFC®), is an investment financial adviser and associate at Smith, Moses, and Company, LLC (SMC), an independently owned financial services firm specializing in financial, estate, and investment* strategies. SMC has offices in Vandalia and Beavercreek, Ohio.

Dan has been working in the financial services industry since 1981. Today he specializes in retirement planning, analysis, and transfer strategies; IRA and 401(k) rollovers; and traditional and Roth IRA plans. He establishes employer-sponsored retirement plans – including pension, profit-sharing, and 401(k) – as well as SIMPLE IRAs. He works with businesses and individual investors, providing financial and estate planning as well as fee- and commission-based investment advice.

Dan has adopted a client-first approach. As the “general manager” of a client’s investments, Dan works closely with clients to develop an investment policy they both agree upon. He learns which tools and products a client may prefer – or not prefer – for personal, financial, or ethical reasons, or because of past experience. He then researches, tailors, and presents alternatives and a recommendation, with plenty of versatility, based on a client’s risk tolerance, income needs, or other assets. Once the portfolio is in place, Dan strives to ensure his clients’ assets are preserved as changes occur and players evolve in the marketplace.

We believe clients appreciate Dan’s accessibility. He typically meets with clients two to four times a year. These interactions allow Dan to review the big picture and progress toward goals, discuss life-changing events that affect investments, that strive to ensure the plan is on track, make adjustments, or recommend a new path.

His goal is to help investors transition from the growth phase to the income phase. Since retirees are living longer, Dan strives to help clients maintain their retirement assets through proper management to help avoid shortfalls, and if they choose, are able to transfer a portion of that asset to the next generation.

Dan takes a holistic approach to investments and retirement planning, since quite often, his discussions with clients lead to further exploration of other life-planning issues such as insurance, long-term care, beneficiaries, asset preservation, and trusts as a wealth-transfer strategy. All of these have an impact on investment advice and solutions. Dan often works with a client’s trusted advisers, or recommends other advisers such as attorneys and accountants as needed.

Experience: Dan began his career in 1981 at Equitable (now AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company), where he sold life insurance and ultimately obtained registrations to sell stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. In 1988, he joined Klais & Co., a third-party administrator of health insurance plans, where he established, administered, and serviced self-insured plans for employers covering 70 to 2,000 people. In 1993, he became a bank broker at Star Bank, now U.S. Bank, working as an investment specialist for six branches in Miami and Darke counties. Many of his clients today he met during his tenure at Star Bank.

In 2000, he joined Smith, Moses and Company, LLC in Dayton. Today the firm, which continues to expand its number of advisory/fee-for-service accounts, is one of the largest independently owned financial services firms in the area, with 10 independent advisers.

Dan currently handles approximately 250 accounts. The majority of his individual clients are located in Miami, Darke, and Shelby counties, and many are either about to enter retirement or are already in retirement.

Credentials: Dan received his CLU designation in 1985 and his ChFC in 2002 from The American College. In 1981, he earned a bachelor of arts in business and mathematics from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.

Dan is Registered and does business with clients in six states. He holds Life, Accident & Health, and Variable license plus these registrations:

  • Series 6 (Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Limited Representative)
  • Series 7 (General Securities Representative)
  • Series 63 (Uniform Securities Agent State Law)
