Forest W. Moses is a certified financial planner (CFP®) and a partner at Smith, Moses and Company, LLC (SMC), an independently owned financial services firm specializing in financial, estate, and investment* strategies. SMC has offices in Vandalia and Beavercreek, Ohio.

Forest has been working in the financial planning industry since 1984. As an independent financial adviser, he serves both businesses and individuals, many of whom are over age 50 or retired. He specializes in managing investment portfolios; preparing retirement, financial, and estate plans; and managing retirement plans for small businesses.

Forest creates customized programs since no two clients – even those who are the same age with the same amount to invest – are not the same. Managing an investment portfolio properly means asking questions to pinpoint a client’s risk level, which can change and require readjustments over time. As your analytical portfolio strategist, Forest conducts a significant amount of research into other investments that aren’t aligned with the stock market as well as international markets. Thus, he can offer diversified portfolios that may lower risk levels with higher potential returns.

He prepares highly targeted retirement plans after studying a client’s current expenses, evaluating which expenses may  be higher or lower in retirement, and examining a client’s current assets and capacity to save.

Based on this analysis, he may recommend plan modifications: postponing retirement for a few years, increasing savings amounts or adjusting portfolios to increase potential returns. He takes the time to educate his clients so that joint, informed decisions can be made.

Forest offers retirement plans, primarily 401(k) plans, to small businesses with approximately $10 million to $20 million in sales and 20 to 100 employees. Besides providing basic investment advice, hassle-free programs and online systems that are easy to use, Forest assists employees with enrollment, investment changes, and withdrawals. And he works closely with a company’s controller to potentially reduce the company’s fiduciary liability.

Experience:  Forest began his career in 1984 in the treasurer’s division of Dayton Power & Light Co. There he handled day-to-day cash management, invested money for the pension fund, and later managed gas purchases for the company. In 1985, he began his financial planning career, and two years later established himself as a full-time, self-employed financial planner.

In 1992, Forest and two partners, David A. Smith and Michael Griesmeyer, established Smith, Griesmeyer & Moses LLC in Dayton because they wanted to provide clients unbiased financial advice and product recommendations without worrying about production quotas or being driven by transactions and commissions. In 1998, SGM opened a second office in Beavercreek.

Today the firm, known as Smith, Moses and Company, continues to expand its number of advisory/fee-for-service accounts and is one of the largest independently owned financial services firms in the Dayton area, with 10 independent advisers.

Credentials: Forest received his CFP in 1988 after earning a bachelor of science in finance from Wright State University in Ohio in 1984. Today he does business with clients in 24 states and holds Life, Accident & Health, and  Annuity licenses plus these registrations:

  • Series 6 (Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Limited Representative)
  • Series 7 (General Securities Representative)
  • Series 22 (Direct Participation Programs Representative)
